MODALS


I.                    MODALS PRESENT ( MODALS +V1)
a.       Will
·         To indicates the future plan
Example: Rahma will go to France tomorrow
·         Will = be going to
Example : Rahma be going to go to France tomorrow
·         To indicates willingness
Example : I will help you. I know you have a lot of problems

b.      Shall
·         To indicates the future plan with the subject I and We
Examples:   I shall visit my mother tomorrow
                        We shall play this game tonight

c.       May
·         To indicates possibility
Example: it is cloudy. It may rain tonight

d.      Can
·         To indicates ability
Example: she can speak English very well
·         Can = be able to
Example : she be able to  speak English very well

e.      Must
·         To express necessity
Example: I must study hard
·         To indicates conclusion
Example: Rahma must be at Kekend`s house now
·         Must = have / has to
Example : I has to study hard

II.                  MODALS PAST ( MODALS + V1 )
a.       Would
·         To indicates the past activity
Example : I would go to the market when it was suddenly raining
·         To indicates the habit in the past times
Example : she would cry before sleeping when she was a child

b.      Should
·         To indicates suggestion
Example: you should rearrange your schedule
·         To indicates possibility / certainty
Example: Rahma should be 19 years old now

c.       Could
·         To indicates past ability
Example: he could move this stone when he was young

III.                MODALS PRESENT ( MODALS + V3 )
a.       Should have
·         Used to express the hope that can`t be  achieved in the past
Example : setiawan should have gone to his school this morning

b.      Must have
·         Used to give conclusion of the past event
Example: the grass is wet. It must have rained last night

c.       Might have
·         Used to make draw conclusion of the past event
Example: his room is still dirty, he might have forgotten to clean it

d.      Could have
·         Used to express ability in the past that was not done
Example: in fact, he could have finished
